Former Red Sox top pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza, who was traded for Drew Pomeranz in 2016, is set to undergo his second Tommy John procedure since being dealt to the San Diego Padres.

The news was first reported by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The 21-year-old Espinoza, who was a top-20 prospect in baseball at the time of the trade, has not pitched since 2016. He will miss all of 2019 and likely part of 2020 as well.

Espinoza has not pitched higher than Single-A and only threw 32 1/3 innings in the Padres organization before his first Tommy John surgery in 2017.

Shortly after Espinoza was traded for Pomeranz, Major League Baseball gave the Red Sox the opportunity to rescind the swap after an investigation found that the Padres withheld medical information on Pomeranz’s arm. The Red Sox declined to nullify the trade.
