ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The Red Sox opened up their series with the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays with a 6-4 win Friday night.

The Sox used the long ball to power the victory, hitting three home runs, including back-to-back solo shots from Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland in the eighth inning to put Boston ahead for good. Christian Vazquez added a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each drove in a run.

Boston’s bullpen was strong, tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball. Brandon Workman did not allow a hit over 1 2/3 innings and took the win to improve to 1-1.

Matt Barnes pitched the eighth inning and Ryan Brasier picked up his fourth save of 2019 with a scoreless ninth.

The Sox will send Rick Porcello (0-3, 11.12 ERA) to the mound on Saturday in game two of the series. Tampa Bay will counter with right-hander Charlie Morton (2-0, 2.18 ERA).
