According to a report by ESPN’s Free-agent nugget from NFL annual meeting: The Patriots are still in talks with free-agent DT Allen Bailey, who is also considering a return to the Chiefs. The 6-foot-3, 288-pound Bailey enters his 9th season in 2019. Would be a fit on interior alongside Lawrence Guy/Mike Pennel.
The Patriots reportedly hosted Bailey for a visit shortly after the start of NFL free agency. The veteran defensive lineman turned 30 years old on Monday and is apparently choosing between two opportunities to contend for the Super Bowl.
Perhaps it’s coming down to money. That could be where the Patriots ultimately lose out to Kansas City. But Bailey would certainly fit in nicely as a presence on the defensive interior. Replacing Danny Shelton remains one of the team’s top remaining offseason priorities.
Money shouldn’t be an issue for the Pats now, though, after tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement. If they land Bailey, the defense might be pretty much set for 2019. Besides whoever comes in via the draft, of course.
Tight end has suddenly become an area where the Patriots could stand to improve through free agency or trade, along with wide receiver and swing tackle.
