The Sea Dogs and the Red Sox later confirmed the report.
"We are excited and proud to extend our relationship with the Boston Red Sox, allowing our incredible fans to continue to see future Red Sox stars right here in Portland," said Portland Sea Dogs Chairman Bill Burke. "We thank the Red Sox for their commitment to the Sea Dogs organization and the city of Portland."
The agreement represents a two-year extension of the partnership between the Red Sox and the Sea Dogs. Their current affiliation pact was set to expire in 2020.
Minor league rules limit affiliation agreements to a maximum of four years.
The Sea Dogs have been the Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox since 2003. They were a Florida Marlins affiliate from 1994-2002.
