Boston Red Sox

Entering the Bronx tied at 1-1 in their ALDS series with the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox have announced that the right-handed Nathan Eovaldi will get the ball for Monday’s Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.

The decision comes as somewhat of a surprise, as many expected that it would be Rick Porcello, who recorded two outs and threw 15 pitches in the eighth inning of Boston’s Game 1 victory, getting the call on the hill.

While undoubtedly surprising, Eovaldi’s had success against the Yankees this season, with one win, 18 strikeouts, and a 1.93 ERA in 23.1 innings against the Bombers. But it’s certainly worth noting that the hard-throwing righty has surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits but tallied 10 strikeouts in 13.1 innings at Yankee Stadium this season.

Acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor-leaguer Jalen Beeks prior to the non-waiver trade deadline this season, Eovaldi posted a 3-3 record and 3.33 ERA in 11 starts with the Red Sox this season.

This will be the first playoff start of Eovaldi’s MLB career.
