The hits keep coming for the Patriots.
Running back Rex Burkhead and rookie linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley have landed on injured reserve. Burkhead is dealing with a neck injury, while Bentley’s ailment is unknown at this time.
Jim McBride of the Boston Globe was the first to report the news late Wednesday morning.
In their place, the Patriots have re-signed running back Kenjon Barner and have added former Colts defensive end/outside linebacker John Simon.
There is no word yet on whether either player will be able to return this year. The Patriots can bring two players back from injured reserve eight weeks after they are placed on the list.
Burkhead has dealt with injury problems since arriving in New England, but has contributed when he has been on the field. He scored eight touchdowns in 10 games last year.
Bentley, who had an interception in Sunday night’s loss to Detroit, had been the bright spot in this year’s rookie class. He now becomes the sixth 2018 draft pick to end up on injured reserve this season.
Sony Michel, who underwent a knee procedure in the preseason, and cornerback Keion Crossen are the only rookies remaining on the roster.
