Quarterback Landry Jones came to Foxboro after having been released from Pittsburgh Steelers came the final weekend before the start of the regular season, and after a week of workouts that included stops in Dallas and Jacksonville.
A fourth-round pick by the Steelers in 2013, the 29-year-old Jones has played in 18 games in his NFL career, and went 23-for-28 for 239 yards and a touchdown in his lone appearance in the 2017 season. During his final preseason with the Steelers, Jones completed 10 of 13 passes for 127 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.
The Patriots currently have Brian Hoyer signed as Tom Brady’s backup, and 2018 seventh-round pick Danny Etling remains on the team’s practice squad, and has been in attendance for both of New England’s road games this season.
The 29-year-old Dontrelle Inman arrived still in search of a 2018 landing spot following a 2017 split between the Los Angeles Chargers and Chicago Bears. It was between those teams that the 6-foot-3 Inman totaled 25 catches on 44 targets for 343 yards and a touchdown. It’s worth noting that the Patriots, who acquired Josh Gordon last week, have had just three wide receivers activated in back-to-back games, and that Phillip Dorsett suffered a seemingly minor injury late in Sunday’s loss.
Cornerback David Amerson, meanwhile, is in search of a landing spot following a late-camp cut slip from the Kansas City Chiefs. A second-round pick in 2013, Amerson has bounced around between the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders in his career, and totaled 14 tackles with four passes defended in six games with the Raiders a season ago.
Amerson’s workout for the Patriots comes with the Patriots’ secondary having been utterly terrible over the last two weeks, and with cornerback Eric Rowe having missed Sunday’s Week 3 meeting in Detroit due to a groin injury.
The Patriots will look to snap their two-game losing streak Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
