New England Patriots

Trey Flowers and Patrick Chung remain in the concussion protocol and both appear unlikely to play on Sunday night against the Detroit Lions, based on the New England Patriots’ final injury report for Week 3.

Flowers and Chung are both listed as “Doubtful” with concussions. Each of them missed practice from Wednesday through Friday. If Flowers ends up inactive on Sunday night, Derek Rivers is likely to step in and make his NFL debut. If Chung can’t go, the newly re-signed Cyrus Jones could take his spot as the team’s new punt returner and an emergency safety. Nate Ebner is the likely “Big Nickel” safety on the depth chart in Chung’s absence.

Alarms rang when tight end Rob Gronkowski appeared on the Thursday injury report as limited with an ankle issue. But Gronkowski was removed from the injury report altogether on Friday and should be good to go Sunday night.

Receiver Josh Gordon, whom the Patriots acquired from the Cleveland Browns on Monday, has been limited with a hamstring injury and is listed as “Questionable” for Sunday. According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots started the practice week with the intention of dressing Gordon against the Lions. This implies that they could change their minds if Gordon didn’t have a good enough week of practice.

One late-breaking injury is a chest issue for tight end Jacob Hollister, who has been ruled out. That could open a spot on offense for Gordon to make his Patriots debut.

On the bright side, defensive end Deatrich Wise (finger) and running back Sony Michel (knee) were both removed from the report after participating in full during the week. Both could be in for increased workloads. Wise would be due to necessity with Flowers likely out, while Michel is finally back to 100 percent with a chance to build on his NFL debut in Jacksonville.
