New England Patriots

The Patriots have had a revolving door at the bottom of the wide receiver depth chart since the middle of the preseason. So pretty much any talented wideout is going to get buzz about coming to New England when he becomes available.

Topping today’s rumor pile is Josh Gordon, the supremely talented but exceedingly troubled Browns receiver. He’s likely to be traded or released this week after Cleveland has decided to move on from him. And despite his off-field issues, he’s probably too talented to remain unsigned for very long. This isn’t like Dez Bryant, who reportedly isn’t the same player he used to be. Gordon is still in his physical prime.

So that’s why OddsShark released betting lines for the team that Gordon winds up with, and look who’s at the top. The Patriots have the best odds at +200, tied with the Dallas Cowboys.

These odds seem to be based mostly on teams in need of receivers, rather than some kind of inside scoop. The Cowboys, 49ers, and Colts could all use more talent and depth at the position. The Patriots and Cowboys are likely at the top based on their respective track records. For the Patriots, it’s their penchant to take chances on troubled players in the hopes that their outstanding program gets the most out of them. for the Cowboys, it’s their penchant to take chances on troubled players because they favor talent over trouble.

Gordon no doubt has game-breaking ability when he’s right mentally. Unfortunately, the second part has severely held Gordon back from reaching his full potential. He could legitimately be the best receiver in the NFL is he overcame his demons, which include substance abuse and struggles with anxiety.

The Patriots aren’t likely to gamble that they can fix Gordon’s non-football problems. The Browns are certainly done trying. And that’s even after Gordon caught the game-tying touchdown with a spectacular catch against the Steelers in Week 1.

Albert Breer said on Sunday’s Sports Hub Patriots pregame show that the Patriots are doing their research on Gordon’s potential availability. But right now, it seems more likely that the Patriots re-sign Kenny Britt, who’s coming to Foxborough for a workout on Monday. Unless Belichick can spin off a low draft pick or even swap picks for Gordon, the Patriots may not want to take on the off-field burdens that come with Gordon’s on-field talent.
