CHICAGO – The Red Sox and White Sox split their four-game series this weekend with Chicago’s 8-0 victory on Sunday.
The White Sox chased Red Sox starter Brian Johnson (4-4) from the game in the second inning. The lefty allowed four runs on seven hits and recorded only four outs.
Early outing struggles have been common for Johnson, who has a 6.75 ERA in the first inning this year.
Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson homered off Johnson as part of a 3-for-5 day.
Left fielder Daniel Palka hit his 20th homer run of the season off William Cuevas, who allowed two runs and was one of four relievers used by Boston in the loss.
Cuevas left the game due to heat-related illness.
White Sox starter James Shields (6-15) scattered four hits over six scoreless innings of work.
The Red Sox maintained their 7.5 game lead on the Yankees after New York lost to Detroit 11-7 Sunday.
The Red Sox head to Atlanta Monday to open up a three-game interleague series opener with the Braves. Nathan Eovaldi, who pitched only two innings in Friday’s rain-delayed game, will take the ball in place of David Price, who is nursing a left wrist contusion. Eovaldi is 5-7 with a 4.35 ERA.
The Braves have not announced a starter for Monday.
