ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The Tampa Bay Rays teed off on Red Sox starter Hector Velazquez on their way to a 10-3 victory Friday night.
Velazquez (7-2) was charged with eight runs on nine hits over 2 2/3 innings. The righty struck out four and walked two.
The Rays chased Velazquez from the game after the righty allowed six consecutive hits as part of a five-run third inning.
Jalen Beeks (3-1) picked up his second straight win over his former team. The lefty went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs. Beeks tossed four scoreless innings in a winning effort on Sunday in Boston.
Rays catcher Michael Perez went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Shortstop Willy Adames went 2-for-3 with a home run. Centerfielder Carlos Gomez also drove in two runs.
Xander Bogaerts stayed hot with a 3-for-5 night that included a two-RBI double.
The Sox put up 13 hits but left 11 men on base.
Rick Porcello (15-6, 4.14 ERA) will take the ball for Boston in game two of the series against the Rays Saturday night.
