New England Patriots

Malcolm Mitchell attended the second day of 2018 training camp for the New England Patriots on Friday in Foxboro, after being the lone absence during day 1 on Thursday.

The third-year receiver took the field in uniform for warmups, but soon departed the main field to head down to the lower area with the Patriots’ players who are on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Reports surfaced earlier this week that Mitchell had a new procedure on his injured knee that wasn’t a surgery.

Other reports suggested that the Patriots were considering moving on from Mitchell, who missed the entire 2017 season with the knee injury and entered the NFL with a history of knee troubles. Bill Belichick, however, decried the “media speculation” going on about Mitchell during his first press conference of camp on Wednesday.

In addition to Mitchell, running back Brandon Bolden (non-football illness) returned to the practice field for the Patriots and stayed on the main field after Mitchell left.

The battle for roster spots at wide receiver remains one of the top items to watch for as training camp unfolds.
