Boston Red Sox

Chris Sale struck out 12 Kansas City Royals in just six innings, and the Red Sox scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-5 win in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium on Friday night.

Sale lowered his season ERA to 2.36 in the win. He enters Saturday leading the American League with 176 strikeouts in 122 innings.

Mookie Betts led off the game with his 22nd home run of the season, and J.D. Martinez then hit his 27th in the second inning, which Xander Bogaerts followed up with his 14th longball.

The Royals scored four times in the final three innings, but it was too little too late.
