Sale Strikes Out 13, Red Sox Shut Out Mariners to Win Weekend Series
Chris Sale struck out 13 over seven dominant innings as the Boston Red Sox blanked the Seattle Mariners, 5-0, to win their three-game weekend series at Fenway Park on Sunday.
Sale has a 1.29 ERA with 43 strikeouts over his last 28 innings, spanning four starts, although the Red Sox went 2-2 in those games. He leads the American League with 153 strikeouts, and his 2.56 ERA is seventh-best in the league.
Offensively, Mitch Moreland led the Red Sox with two RBIs on a 1-for-4 afternoon, including his 11th home run of the season. He falls about 41 at-bats shy of qualifying for the batting title, but his .299 average would rank second among all AL first basemen. His .937 OPS would rank first by a wide margin; the Athletics’ Matt Olson leads qualified first basemen at .798.
Up Next: The Red Sox are off Monday before kicking off a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park.
