Red Sox Shut Out Orioles 5-0 Behind Martinez’s Two Home Runs, Rodriguez’s Strong Start
J.D. Martinez continued his torrid streak with two more home runs as the Boston Red Sox shut out the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 on Sunday at Fenway Park. Eduardo Rodriguez also earned his fourth win in one of his strongest outings of the season.
Martinez wrapped his first longball of the afternoon around Pesky’s Pole in right field, breaking the scoreless tie to put the Red Sox up 1-0 in the second inning.
And his second home run was a two-run shot in the fifth inning that he launched to straight-away center field, his 15th of the season to tie him for the American League lead with teammate Mookie Betts.
“E-Rod” hurled 5.2 shutout innings, scattering nine singles with no walks and striking out seven. He lowered his season ERA from 4.68 to 4.12 in the process.
Up Next: The Red Sox get a day off on Monday before they head to St. Petersburg for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Tuesday. Chris Sale (4-1, 229 ERA) will take on Jake Faria (3-2, 5.20 ERA).
