The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 on Friday night off the bat of catcher Luke Maile, who hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the 12th inning to earn the Jays the walkoff win in the opener of a weekend series at Rogers Centre.
Boston took the loss on Friday despite ace Chris Sale delivering one of his most dominant outings of the season. The lefty struck out 15 Blue Jays in nine innings, but the Red Sox couldn’t scratch across enough runs to avoid extra innings.
It appeared as if Maile could cost the Blue Jays the game in the top of the seventh inning, when a passed ball allowed Brock Holt to score the go-ahead run to make it 3-2 Red Sox. However, Maile tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with the first of his two homers.
Up Next: David Price takes the mound under a microscope after a week filled with controversy and injury concerns as the Red Sox look to rebound on Saturday. Price (2-4, 5.11 ERA) takes on Marco Estrada (2-2, 5.21 ERA) in the pitching matchup.
