New England Patriots

The New England Patriots drafted a quarterback on Saturday, selecting LSU signal-caller Danny Etling with the 219th pick.

Etling spent part of his offseason working with Tom House, the same coach who has been working with Tom Brady for several years. He’s also coming off a college career having played for four different head coaches and offensive coordinators at LSU.

However, Etling started his career at Purdue, when he started the final seven games of the season as a true freshman. He transferred to LSU as a sophomore.

Etling started all 13 games in 2017 as a senior for LSU and completed 60 percent of his passes, compiling 2,463 yards and 16 touchdowns against two interceptions. However, persistent mechanical issues hurt Etling’s draft status and were the impetus for his work with House.

NFL.com acknowledges Etling’s good size (6-foot-3, 222 pounds) and NFL-caliber arm, but also his need to improve his pocket presence that have contributed to his poor mechanics when under pressure.
